The Elektron Digitakt Compact Digital Drum Machine enables you to upload samples that you can then tune, cut, loop, and run through filters. Because its advanced features give you so much control over individual values, you can create your own “drum kits” and beats that are as experimental as you like – you’re not limited to pre-loaded samples or to familiar retro sounds. You can even surprise yourself by engaging the Randomizer function.
Digitakt’s compact size and solid build quality make it quite portable, which Elektron intended so that it can be a tool for live performance as well as for the studio. It functions as a MIDI sequencer for up to eight pieces of external gear, and its chromatic mode enables you to use it as an instrument for composing and playing melodies. The Retrig function causes a note to repeat at whatever rate and length you set; Micro Timing keeps rhythms sounding natural and human-played by taking them just slightly off the grid.
The buttons engage like keys on a keyboard, and with their positive feel, your muscle memory can help you to play Digitakt without looking. Though when you do look, the light display works well in all lighting conditions and is easy to read.
Like other Elektron gear, Digitakt supports Overbridge protocol, which allows it to be used as plug-ins on your computer. So if you choose the Elektron Digitakt as your compact digital drum machine, you’ll also be choosing a whole range of expanded possibilities for how you create and perform.
